"GUCKES - At Frankford, on the 28th ult., MATHIAS GUCKES, in the 83d year of his age.
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence, Edmund street, near Orthodox, this (Friday morning), at 12 o'clock. Services at the German Lutheran Emanuel Church, of Frankford. Proceed to Glenwood Cemetery."

He was born Albig, Rheinhessen, Germany, the son of Johnann Jacob and Maria Barbara (Trautwein) Guckes. He married 10 November 1812, Morscheim, Rheinhessen, Germany, Marie Elizabetha Bayer. They had children: Barbara, Johannes (died young), Jakob, Philip, Elizabeth, Johannes, Dorothea, and Katherina.
At the time of the 1850 census, he lived in Philadelphia's 8th Ward. At the time of the 1860 census he had a grocery next door to his son, Philip Guckes. At the time of the 1868 Philadelphia Directory he lived with his son at 825 N. 3rd Street.
In 1936 Glenwood Cemetery was closed and the burials were moved to Glenwood Memorial.
