British politician and soldier. Born in Felsted, Essex, in 1799, he joined the British Army as an officer and was commissioned in the Coldstream Guards. He served in Flanders, Belguim from 1793 to 1794 and commanded them in Ireland in 1798. He became a Major-General in 1802 and a General in 1819. In 1796, he elected Member of Parliament for Liverpool from 1802 to 1830. In 1811, he recieved many requests from a Liverpool resident, John Bellingham, for the British Goverment to take up his case for compansation for his imprisonment in Russia. In May 1812, the embittered Bellingham stormed the House of Commons and shot Prime-Minister, Spencer Percevel dead. Gascoyne was subsequently used as a witness in the unsuing murder trail, as he had recognized Bellingham as the murderer.
