For many years, Ella taught school in and around Ashland, Nebraska. She also played the organ for the Methodist Church in Ashland. She inherited from her father a 160-acre farm in Saunders County. She sold half of it to her brother, Elmer, but continued to live with her husband and family on the remaining half. In the family portrait, she stands in the center between her father, Nels, and brother, Elmer.
