Tillman gave his residence as Center Point, Indiana when he enlisted on August 11, 1862 as a Private in Co I 85th Indiana Infantry Regiment. He died of wounds in the Battle of Peachtree Creek (north of Atlanta), and was originally buried close to the battlefield. He was re-interred at Marietta National Cemetery some time afterward. The 85th Indiana Infantry Regiment served in the 2nd Brigade of the Third Division of XX Corps - Army of the Cumberland under Major General Joseph Hooker.
