The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, December 12, 1889; pg. 5

ARNSBURG, Neb. Dec. 4, '89.

It is with profound sorrow that I have to announce the death of Louis Schumm, known by about every man, as, uncle Louis. Being not well for the last few months, he came in the hands of a quack, who promised to cure him, but instead of that he only relived (sic) him of $200. A few days before his death he went to Lincoln to see the quack, only to get some more promises, but in reality, he being aware of his end, remained to die in the house of Rev. Kuppenbender now at Lincoln, but formerly of St. Stephens, to whom he was a warm friend. Saturday morning Nov. 23 after partaking of a good breakfast, he sat down in a rocking chair, and after breathing a few times, passed peacefully away. He died of dropsy of the heart.

Louis Schumm was born near Munich, Bavaria, July 2, 1822 (sic); came to this country August 21, 1848 and landed at Madison, Ind. From there he went to Rochester, N.Y. and in 1855 to Iowa, where he lived till (sic) 1872, when he emigrated to Nebraska and took a homestead on Liberty Creek. St Stephens church (sic) is built upon his farm and it was Schumm, who had the first hand in the building of the same. His house was always open to every body and most every family now living here found under his roof the first shelter and welcome. St Stephens loses in him one of her best members, a true christian and the county one of her best citizens. May he be awarded above with those blessings which he so righteously deserved. He leaves a widow and two grown children, both married, to mourn his death. Theo. J.M.
