The death occurred on Monday at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr G. Lovell, of Mr William Melhuish, at the age of 89. The late Mr Melhuish, who had resided in Woodville for the past fifteen years, was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends. He was a prominent and enthusiastic member of the Woodville Bowling Club. The late Mr Melhuish was born on May 3 1844, at Plough Hill, Devonshire. He came to New Zealand in the sailing ship Bluejacket, landing at Lyttelton in 1866. He walked over the Port Hills to Christchurch and then to Kaikoura in 1867. where he farmed until 1903. He then took over the Birch Hill sheep station, 40 miles from Blenheim. Moving to Wellington three years later, he purchased the Happy Valley sheep station and resided there for four years. He then lived in retirement at Hastings for a few years, but in 1915 took over the Bushbey Park sheep station at Palmerston South. In 1918 he disposed of this property and since then had lived in retirement in Woodville.
The deceased gentleman was married in 1875. His wife, who predeceased him many years ago, was Miss Sarah Kempthorne. Mr Melhuish is survived by a family of two daughters and one son - Mrs Lane (Blenheim), Mrs G. Lovell (Woodville) and Mr Walter Melhuish (Te Kauwhata). There are six grandchildren and two great grand-children. The eldest son was killed at Messines. Like all the pioneers, the late Mr Melhuish passed through very strenuous times, but by hard work and perseverance succeeded. He was a man of fine physique.
