Sarah Ann Melhuish was born on the 21 March, 1876 to Mr and Mrs William Melhuish in Kaikoura. Her father was a runholder and farmer who took up the Birch Hill Station in 1906 where Sarah likely came in to contact with Walter Landon Lane of Leatham Valley. The pair became pregnant and subsequently married in 1908 before moving to Frankton Junction soon after the birth of their first son Tim. As Walter's business ventures didn't go as planned, the young family returned to Marlborough where they lived for a time with her brother in law George's family at d'Urville Island. The growing family later settled permanently in Blenheim where Walter found general farm and muster work in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys. After Walter's sudden death at the age of forty-five, Sarah stayed at the property in Dashwood Street and was supported by her family and her four sons. She lived a long life of eighty-five years and never remarried, suffering from dementia in her final years. She is remembered as a kind and proper lady.
