Nellie Viola Emch was the daughter of Nicholas [Niclaus] Carlton Emch and his wife Rachel Rebecca Torrence and raise on the farm her parents rented for many years near Carroll in Wayne County, Nebraska. Her father's side of the family was Swiss and had immigrated to Ohio in the 1850s. Her mother's side of the family were Scottish and had immigrated to Northern Ireland around 1630, and then to Pennsylvania in the 1740s. Nellie married on 17 January 1900, at Carroll in Wayne County, Nebraska William Christian Kamrath.
In 1907, she and her husband, and their young family, joined her father and brothers and homestead near Leith in Grant County, North Dakota where they initially lived in a sod house built by William with the help of his in-laws.
Nellie, was a perfect counter-balance to her husband's Teutonic temperament. While she could prove to be just as headstrong as her husband and always a stickler for manners and correct behavior in public she was remembered as saintly in her generosity and quite, gentle reverent qualities and manner, which endeared her to so many folks. She was also known for her fine singing voice and was often called upon to sing hymns at the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Leith. She was also an expert with the needle and could sew, knit, and crochet the most beautiful wedding and birthday gifts for family and friends.
Nellie and her husband had eight children: Charles Dwight Kamrath, Roy Clair Kamrath, Cyril Nicholas Kamrath, Ardath Maude Kamrath, Claude William Kamrath, Mildred Vida (née Kamrath) Lehman, Roswell Rea Kamrath, and Marcia Evelyn (née Kamrath) Johnson.
