Elizabeth is the 9th and the youngest child of Rev. Joab Hill (1775-1847) and Elizabeth Lane Hill (1784-1864). One brother, Pleasant, died young. She was born in Tennessee before the family decided to move west for the sake of land. They settled first in Iowa, but couldn't keep their slaves there, so they moved across the line into Missouri. She married Israel Duty on 12th day of November 1848 (Israel is listed as "Isaac" Duty on that document.)

When the rest of the children moved West to Oregon, Elizabeth stayed behind in Clark County. Later her brother William Hill returned to Clark County, as did her mother Elizabeth Lane Hill. Her brother James returned to the Springfield, MO area. The other five of her siblings remained in Oregon, Idaho and California.

She is the mother of 6 children: George Herschel, Charles Gant, Mary Louise, Sarah E., Adelaide, Olivia Belle.
