ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH (Alton, IL), Tuesday, January 31, 1961:
Newton Earl Kopsie, 26, radioman 3C, U.S.N., died Sunday at Sasebo, Japan, according to a telegram received by his father, Michael James Kopsie of 1205 W. 9th St.
Death was due to a coronary thrombosis, the telegram from Vice Admiral W. R. Smedberg stated.
Kopsie, who enlisted in the Navy March 18, 1951, received his boot training at Great Lakes naval station and later attended a seamanship school in San Diego, Calif.
In 1953 while stationed at Bainridge, Md., where he was attending a communications school, he was married to Verna Lee Starner of Philadelphia. They are parents of two sons, Earl Jr. and Tommy. Mrs. Kopsie and the two boys have been with Radioman Kopsie in Japan.
Born in Alton March 18, 1934, he was a son of Michael James and the late Mrs. Violet Kopsie.
Previous to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, Kopsie attended Alton High School and was employed at Noll's Bakery.
Surviving in addition to his father, wife, and two sons, are six brothers, Michael Albert, Kenneth Leon, Ronald Nelson, James Edward, and Richard Eugene, Alton, and Pfc. Carl Francis, U.S. Army, stationed in Germany, and a sister, Esther Elaine, Alton.
Pfc. Kopsie has been granted an emergency leave to attend the funeral. He was scheduled to leave Germany on the first transport from there to the United States his father has been notified by the Red Cross.

Funeral rites for Newton Earl Kopsie, 26, radioman 3C, U.S.N., will be conducted Wednesday in the Ruffenach Funeral Home, 2101 S. 21st St., Philadelphia, Pa. Interment will be in Beverly National Cemetery, New Jersey.
Kopsie, who died Jan. 29 in Sasebo, Japan, is the son of Michael James Kopsie of 1205 W. 9th St., and the late Mrs. Violet Kopsie.

Earl Kopsie and Bride Honored Tuesday
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Kopsie, 1205 West Ninth street, entertained with an open house Tuesday night honoring their son, TESN Earl Kopsie and his bride, the former Miss Verna Lee Starner of Philadelphia, Pa. The couple were married August 22 in Elkton, Md.
Mrs. Michael Kopsie was assisted in serving refreshments to the many relatives and friends who called by Miss Janice Shearburn and Miss Elise Eyster. The table was centered with dolls representing a bride and bridesmaid.
Seaman Kopsie will leave Sunday to report to Newport, R. I., and his bride will return to Philadelphia to reside with her parents while Seaman Kopsie is on duty.
