SPRINGFIELD - Harry E. Beams Sr., 83, of Springfield died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich.

He was born April 19, 1926, in Detroit, the son of Harry C. and Jessie M. O'Connor Beams. He married Norma Jean Timm on Aug. 22, 1947; she preceded him in death on July 25, 1989. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Harry E. Beams Jr.; two brothers, John "Jack" Beams and Robert "Bob" Beams.

Mr. Beams was a resident of Springfield for over 70 years. He retired after 30 years at Fiat-Allis as a mechanical engineer, then worked for two years each at DICKEY-john, and at Bunn Corporation in mechanical design.

He was a member of Springfield Church of the Brethren since his youth. He graduated from Feitshans High School in January 1944. He was a member of the United States Navy, serving during WW II. He entered the V 12 program in the Navy and attended Gustavus Adolphus College. After mustering out he attended the U of I and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Fiat-Allis Salaried Retirees Club, past member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He loved being a dad and a grandfather. He was known for his devotion to his church, his optimism and marvelous sense of humor.

Surviving are a daughter, Pamela (husband, Mike) Fuller of Marietta, Ga.; three sons, Dr. David M. (wife, Roberta) Beams of Whitehouse, Texas, and Dr. Mark A. Beams and Bryan K. Beams, both of Kalamazoo, Mich.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Pickering of Springfield and Jessica (husband, David) O'Connor of Virginia Beach, Va.; two brothers, Charles "Chuck" (wife, Emma Lou) Beams of Decatur and Ray "Danny" (wife, Shirley) Beams of Port Orange, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and 13 cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. A lie-in-state will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, at Springfield Church of the Brethren with Pastor Kreston Lipscomb officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
