Charles was born in Nottingham Twp., old Burlington Co., NJ (now Hamilton Twp., Mercer Co.). He married Caroline Lee on 3 Mar. 1853 in Trenton, Mercer Co. They had five children together: Amanda (Hughes) Vansant, Charles F., Joseph Edgar, George R., and Samuel L.
