William was the sixth son and eighth child of Charles and Sarah (nee Schooley) Hughes. Brother of James, Caroline Smith, Martha Van Kirk, Charles Henry, Jacob, Gideon, Lambert, Armitage, and Sarah Mather.

He married Josephine Lee Norton on 3 Feb. 1864 in Hamilton Square, Mercer Co., NJ.

William owned and operated several farms in Hamilton Square, including a dairy farm. Long-time member, elder, and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square. Superintendent of the Sunday School and sang in the choir. In the winter he taught school in Washington Township (a.k.a. Newtown, now Robbinsville). Also a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Free & Accepted Masons. Died of stomach cancer.

Children: George Washington Hughes, Arabella M. Hughes.
