Ray E. Bentley, age 82, of Taylorsville, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at Davis Medical Center in Statesville. He was born in Alexander County February 7, 1917, the son of the late James Walter and Frances Mae Walker Bentley. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and was retired from Schneider Mills, Inc., of Taylorsville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Edward Ronnie Bentley, and two brothers, Hermie Bentley and James Bentley. Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Barnes Bentley; two daughters, Beth Bentley Mize and Husband Roscoe of China Grove and Fay Bentley Hampton and husband Stuart of Taylorsville; two sisters, Mamie Key and Vada Deal, both of Taylorsville; five grandsons, Daniel Hampton, Jason Hampton, and Ben Hampton, all of Taylorsville, and Joshua Mize and Gaven Mize both of China Grove; three great-grandchildren, Alex Hampton, Audrey Hampton, and Ashlynn Hampton, all of Taylorsville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 28, 1999 at Salem Lutheran Church with Rev. Ray Ohlendorf officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers included Daniel Hampton, Scotty Presnell, Terry Barnes, Eric Barnes, Scott Martin, Jamie Land, and Dean Eggers. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church.
