He was born to Harry & Annie (Chambers) Pauley but changed his last name to Sutton when he moved to Texas, albeit not legally. He married Lucille May Needham and they had 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls; 3 died young; Edward #1, Allen, Nellie.

Ed left Texas in 1915 to worked in the oil fields in Oklahoma. Later he and family returned to Texas where he worked as a fisherman off the Gulf of Mexico, near Galveston, Texas. He became so tanned he was nicknamed "Blackie".
Later in life he moved his family to Missouri where he was a farmer in Dora, MO.
