He was the son of George and Glorianna (Purdy) Merritt and he married first about March 1761, Mary Fowler, daughter of Samuel and Charlotte (Purdy) Fowler. He married second in 1800 Sarah (Pugsley) Ecker, daughter of William and Deborah (Stevenson) Pugsley, widow of Wolvert Ecker.

During the American Revolution he reportedly sided with the Tories, although one account is that he served his country.
