Sylvanus is a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted and was mustered in Co. D, 7th Ohio volunteer Infantry on Aug. 11, 1862. Transferred to Co. B, 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on Oct. 31, 1864. He was discharged from hospital on May 15, 1865.
