Mary Walterscheid, 83, of Coffeyville, died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2001) at Windsor Place in the Oxford Unit, Coffeyville.

Mrs. Walterscheid was born Aug. 27, 1917, at Gotebo, Okla., to Edward and Alice Almedia (Mathis) Grigsby. She moved with her parents to Mountain View, Okla., then to Gravette, Ark. before making their home in Coffeyville in 1933.

She married Benity Patrick "Pat" Walterscheid in Cassville, Mo. She worked at the Coffeyville Air Base during World War II. Following her husband's death in 1968, she assumed his duties as bookkeeper at Isham Hardware. In March of 1995, she sold her ownership and retired.

She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Alter Society, the American Legion and Life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Auxiliaries. She was an avid bowler and won many national, state, and local awards. She spent several years as a Kansas certified bowling instructor, teaching junior bowlers and organizing leagues. She also wrote a weekly bowling column for 17 years in the Coffeyville Journal. Her greatest pleasure was her family.

Survivors include one son, Pete of Coffeyville; three brothers, Doyle Grigsby, Harold Grigsby, both of Tulsa, Charley Grigsby of Coffeyville; one sister, Eva Courtney of Topeka; four granddaughters; one great-grandson; two stepgrandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; one great-great stepgrandson; a special friend, Pete Caresio of Coffeyville.

She is preceded in death by her husband; one stepson; three brothers; one sister.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both of Coffeyville. Rosary service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Chapel, Coffeyville.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family would welcome memorials to Holy Name Catholic School.
