Doyle E. Grigsby
Funeral for Doyle E. Grigsby, 97, Lawton, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel, Broken Arrow.

Mr. Grigsby died Thursday, May 14, 2009, in a Lawton care center.

Burial will be in Floral Haven Cemetery, Broken Arrow with local arrangements under direction of Becker Funeral Home.

He was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Gotebo, to William Edward and Alice Almedie Mathis Grigsby. He married Lucille Leatherbury on Nov. 25, 1933, near Carnegie. She died Dec. 22, 2003. He was an aviator for 64 years. He began flying when he was 16 years old, and funded this venture by working at a dairy farm. After obtaining his commercial pilot license, he "barnstormed" all over the country, charging $10 per ride. His overall logged flying time was more than 25,000 hours. He was employed by a contractor for the FAA and educated pilots for World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He also trained Royal Air Force Pilots from England. His other professions included barber, police officer, driver's license examiner, pilot's license examiner and cropdusting. In his retirement years, he performed as a "one-man band."

Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Hollingsworth, Lawton; a sister, Eva Courtner, Topeka, Kan.; a brother, Harold Grigsby, Tulsa; five grandchildren: Pat Hollingsworth and Mike Hollingsworth, both of Lawton; Terry Minton, Arizona; Chris Seaman, Tulsa; and Rob Seaman and wife Rachel, California; and three great-grandchildren: Kaylee Hollingsworth and Marlena Hollingsworth, both of Lawton; and Mark Goodman, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda K. Seaman; and six siblings.
