Edith Caldwell Stone

Edith Meritta Caldwell Stone, 87, of Waynesville passed away Monday, April 4, 2005, at Autumn Care of Waynesville.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1918, in Spartanburg County, S.C., to the late James and Viddie Stuart Caldwell. She taught school several years, substituting at schools around the county but mostly at East Waynesville. She was a member of the Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking especially her dinner rolls and working in her flower gardens, and attending church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bramlett Stone; four sisters, Ethel Reid, Olivia Jackson, Odell Caldwell and Margaret Mathis; and two brothers, Marvin and Ray Caldwell.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Jackson and her husband, Gary, of Waynesville and Ann Greene and her husband, Claude "Buddy" of Mars Hill; one brother, Gene Caldwell of Campobello, S.C.; and five sisters, Floy Hines, Lucille Humphries and Kathleen Hall , all of Spartanburg, S.C., Sarah Smith of Pauline, S.C., and Ina Wyman of Murray, Utah; two grandchildren, Dawn Proffitt and her husband Charlie of Burnsville and Eric Jackson and his wife Michelle of Holly Springs; and one great-grandchild, Mackenzie Proffitt of Burnsville; several nieces, nephews and friends also survive her.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations, with the Rev. Mike Shuford and the Rev. Grady Barringer officiating. Special music will be provided by Art Swarthout and Gail Powell. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family will be at the home of Roy Davis, 41 Elizabeth Chapel Road, Waynesville. Burial will be at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Ron Hyatt, J.N. Hyatt, Phil Leopard, Lawrence Davis, Stan Arrington and David Flood serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Francis, Jim Galloway, Wayne Ferguson, Dr. George Brown and Dr. Timothy Plaut.
