Highly Respected Citizen Passes at Age of 81.
It is with deep regret that The Plaindealer chronicles the passing of Rev. J.W. Swafford, highly respected Choctaw citizen, which occurred at his home a few miles north of Ackerman, in the Cork School House community. He had not been in good health for several years but was only sick about a month when his soul passed back to the God that gave it. Bro. Swaford had lived to the ripe old age of 81 years and died on March 27th, 1934, loved, admired and respected by those who came within the circle of his acquaintance. He was a native of Georgia, having spent his childhood and early young manhood there and in later years came to Mississippi and in 1890 bought a farm and located near Ackerman. For a number of years he was engaged in the ministry, being pastor of several Christian churches, and rendered faithful service for his Master, both in private and religious work. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and practiced in his daily walks of life the principles of this great organization. He was a man of high ideals and stood for and took part in those measures that meant for a higher order of citizenship, both in church and state affairs.
He is survived by the following relatives: His widow, formerly Miss Sarilda Cox; four daughters, Mrs. Mattie Dendy, Ackerman; Mrs. T. L. Griffin, Cleveland; Mrs. H.D. Jeffcoat, Roswell, New Mexico; and Mrs. S. O. Barron, Merigold; also the following sons: T.N. Swafford, Jackson; W. L. Swafford, Merigold; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Gable and Mrs. Savannah Stocks, Ludsville, Ga., and Mrs. Lillian Tabor, Crevecour, Mo; two brothers, I. A. Swafford, Marietta Ga., Harvey Swafford, East Point, Ga. Also 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment took place at Enon Cemetery, being in charge of Rev. A. H. Smith of Dancy.
We extend to the berefit ones our deepest sympathy in the passing of their loved one and this splendid citizen.
