Elmer was the fourth of 13 children born to Alfred and Anna (Kurten) Johnson, Swedish immigrants who homesteaded a farm on Devil's Lake in Barron County, Wisconsin in 1898. Elmer married Kristina Ingrid Lundin in about 1932. The couple had two children - Dolores, born in 1934, and Doug, born in 1943. During the 1920s and 30s, Elmer owned and operated a Tavern in Chicago. Returning to Wisconsin in the 1940s, he built and operated Elmer's Tavern on Long Lake in Washburn County until his death in 1970.
