*Was from the First Family Census Historical New Hanover, North Carolina
*Was a Justice of the Peace & Atty from Paducka, Ky land purchased from George Clark (brother of Lewis & Clark)
*Enlisted in Texas Revolution (under assumed name of Thomas Smith) was in Battle of Goliad Massace, survivor (helped identify 2 *unknown* deaths), also the battles of Coleto & Bexar
*Prisioner of war for 6 years in Mexico (info residing in the archives of Texas and Washington DC)
*State of Texas has given Abel Morgan his own Historical Marker in Texas
Additionally the Cemetery has a separate historical marker based on Abel being buried there
*Listed in the Historical Society Records for the State of Texas
*Several Books referencing him and/or Chapters on his life. Additional newspaper articles telling his stories in the 1800's - the 1900's.

Today marks the 179th anniversary of the Goliad Massacre, during which approximately 342 men under the command of James W. Fannin were killed by Mexican troops acting under the orders of Santa Anna. I've always been curious as to how exactly the order from Santa Anna was worded. This morning I was able to find an English translation of the order. It arrived via courier to Col. José Nicolás de la Portilla, whose men performed the horrendous deed. Here is the translation of Santa Anna's order to Col. Portilla:
"to LT. COL. PORTILLA, Commandant at Golidad
by courier from Bexar, 26 March 1836, order dated March 23rd
I am informed that there have been sent to you by General Urrea, two hundred and thirty-four prisoners, taken in the action of Encinal del Perdito on the 19th and 20th of the present month; and, as the supreme government has ordered that all foreigners taken with arms in their hands, making war upon the nation, shall be treated as pirates, I have been surprised that the circular of the said supreme government has not been fully complied with in this particular; I therefore order that you should give immediate effect to the said ordinance in respect to all those foreigners, who have yielded to the force of arms, having had the audacity to come and insult the Republic, to devastate with fire and sword, as has been the case in Goliad, causing vast detriment to our citizens; in a word, shedding the precious blood of Mexican citizens, whose only crime has been fidelity to their country. I trust that, in reply to this, you will inform me that public vengeance has been satisfied, by the punishment of such detestable delinquents. I transcribe the said decree of the government for your guidance, and, that you may strictly fulfill the same, in the zealous hope, that, for the future, the provisions of the supreme government may not for a moment be infringed."
