First came to Northampton from Connecticut at the age of 10 (1807) to live with Hervey Frink to do light farm chores and attend school. In 1812, he spent a few weeks attempting to learn to be a druggist but found "the pestle too heavy". In 1813, at a little older than 16, he taught school for a semester in Chicopee. In 1814, he was working in a factory weaving broadcloth. By 1817, he was back in Middletown, CT where he met Mary Sizer while working for her father Daniel as a ship's captain.
He married Mary Sizer 8 Nov 1819; they had 13 children.
He married Rhoda Sanderson 30 Aug 1840; they had two children. Amzi & Rhoda moved to West Springfield, where they lived by the Connecticut River.
Died - Age 86 yrs 1 mos 7 ds, old age & pneumonia
