He was a writer and a frontier scout.He was a sheriff and tax collector in Rolla, MO.Married: Hariett Stone in MO. After the birth of their 3rd child, Smith decided to migrate to Texas. His wife refused to follow and divorced him.Smith arrived in San Antonio and changed his first and middle names around because "William" was difficult for Mexicans to pronounce. He was known throughout the town as "El Colorado", Spanish for "Redhead". He served as in the city as military storekeeper until 1835.While in the city, he converted to Catholicism and married a 15 year old Mexican girl, Maria Jesusita Curbelo.Joined DeWitts Colony, Gonzales (Texas) in 1826.He served the Texas Army as Scout and Guide. With Erastus Smith, he led less than 300 troops against 1,700 Mexican troops holding San Antonio.Smith, carrying a message from Col. Travis, to Washinton-on-the Brazos was the last man to leave the Alamo alive.After delivering the message, he returned with men to fight in the battle but heard no gunfire as the horses drank at Cibolo Creek. He was informed that the battle was over and headed eastward to fight at San Jacinto, where Independence was won.John William Smith was the first mayor of San Antonio, Texas.1837-38.Served as a Senator in the Republic of Texas.
