L C Amsden Dead at 88
End Comes to Pioneer Early Today
Veteran Horticulturist Originated Famous Peach that Bore his Name
Lucian Culver Amsden, 88 years old, pioneer Jasper county, farmer and horticulturist and well known citizen died at 5:00 am at his farm home, four miles NW of Carthage, where he had lived for 57 years. He had been a resident of the county 59 years.
Mr Amsden had been in failing health several years, but had been bedfast only one week.
The veteran horticulturist budded and originated the famous Amsden peach, which in earlier years was one of the most extensively grown variety of peaches of any grown throughout the south. It since has been improved by other horticulturists and the improved peach now is generally known under another name.
Developed Fruit Industry
Mr Amsden was one of the origianl members of the Jasper County Horticultural Society and in the earlier days was one of the men most responsible for horticultural devleopment in this section. He grew fruit extensively on his farm.
Not only was the Amsden farm famous for its fruits, but one of the richest mines ever developed in the Carthage district - the Coahuila - was on the Amsden farm.
Mr Amsden was born October 20, 1838 in Reading Vermont. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Electa Amsden, three sons and 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild; also two sisters and a brother, Mrs Dorcas Uhl, a daughter died two years ago. Four other children are also dead. The surviving children are: Robert C Amsden, Maplewood Missouri;l Mrs W A Reeves, Miami Florida; M E Amsden Carthage; Miss Myra Amsden, Cape Girardeau Missouri, who now is on a European tour; L K Amsden , Oak Park Illinois. Mrs Francelia Gilbert, a sister resides in Geneseo Illinois, a brother Loranzo Amsden resides in Seattle Washington and another sister, Mrs Minnie Phillips, lives in California
Funeral Monday
Mr Amsden was a devout Christian and when a young man affiliated with the Christian church.
Services will be held at 3:30 Monday afternoon at the home and burial will be in Fairview cemetery. The body was removed to the Ulmer-Drake funeral home this morning.
