Ortho is the third of three sons born to Hugh Sinclair Johnston and Ellen Jane Robb. His two brothers are Baxter Willard and Hugh Sinclair, Jr. Ortho was only four months old when his father died. His mother married again in 1906 to Armond Andrew Bigler and three half-brothers were born: Armand John, Normal Andrew, and Gerald Morgan.

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho - May 19 (By the Associated Press) - Lying beside the dead body of his favorite horse, his constant companion on many trips through this section of the state, the body of Ortho Robb Johnston, 22, of Sugar City, sheepman, was found near here late last night. Both had fallen when struck by lightning thirty hours before during one of the most severe storms this section of the valley has ever seen.
Mr. Johnston had been to visit his mother and was returning to his sheep camp when struck by the bolt of lightning. He had been a resident of the Teton area since his birth in 1903.
