AUTO ACCIDENT PROVES FATAL TO A.A. CORRELL
The automobile accident, near Effingham, Ill., Saturday night, in which A.A. Correll, citizen of Caruthersville and treasurer of Pemiscot county, was seriously injured, as related in last Tuesday's issue of this paper, resulted in his death about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to long distance phone message reaching relatives here shortly after that time. His death occurred at a hospital in Effingham, where he was taken as soon after the accident as possible, and where death had been almost certainly expected after physicians had examined him.
A message was received yesterday afternoon by Undertaker H.S. Smith from Robinson, Ill., the old home of the Correll family, where the body had been taken, stating that Mrs. Correll and her sons who were there would leave early this morning by auto for Caruthersville with the body of the unfortunate man, expecting to arrive here some time about mid-afternoon. The body will be taken to the family home on upper Ward avenue and the details as to the funeral will be arranged after the arrival of the members of the family.
Little more information of a definite nature has been had concerning the details of the accident, though one version is that Mr. Correll and his two sons, who were driving late to try to reach their destination (Robinson, Ill.) that night, had reached a point on the highway where a detour was necessary because of the road being under repairs. A red light marking the closing of the road was mistaken by Mr. Correll for the tail light of another car, with the result that he had to leave the road unexpectedly, crashing into a tree and wrecking the car. He was injured about the chest and the rear portion of his skull was badly fractured, according to the report.
The deceased was one of our most highly respected citizens and his death is a great shock to those who knew him well. He was serving his second term as treasurer of Pemiscot county, with more that two years of the second term yet remaining, and in this office he had made an excellent record, being noted for his extremely accommodating nature and his careful, painstaking handling of the business entrusted to his care. He was a man of very quiet demeanor, who was never heard to utter a word of harm or of criticism of any person. His influence for good within the community was pronounced and his friends were limited, we believe, only by his acquaintanceship.
