William Lafayette Draper, or Bill, was born in 1900 to parents John Robert Draper (May 1838-March 28, 1901)and Phoebe Ellen Stooksbury(March 1868-?) He was born in Loyston in Union County,TN, a town which is now under Norris Lake. After his father's death in 1901 when he was only 3 months old, his father's sister, Mary Frances Draper Sargent, took primary responsibility for raising him. When he was 10, they took a trip to Missouri for an extended visit to family which had recently moved there. They went in January 1911, and in December of the same year, Mary Sargent passed away in Missouri. Rather than go back to TN, he simply stayed there. He was there till his twenties, when a recruiter for the coal mines encouraged him to move to Harlan County, Ky. He moved there and began to work for the Black Mountain Corpation in Mine 31. He would eventually become a foreman and he was a member of the United Mine Workers. He also met Stella Marie Nunn. They were married and had two children. Dorothy E. Draper was born in October 1926 but she died in early childhood. Clifford Robert Draper was born on July 11, 1928, passed away on May 30, 2003, survived by 6 children with children of their own. Bill Draper's marriage to Stella Nunn ended in divorce. He remarried to Lillie Pace and, when the Black Mountain Corporation closed in the early 1950's, he moved to Dayton, Ohio. He worked odd jobs right up until the end, and he passed away on February 18, 1977.
