Tom Breslauer, 92, of Stroudsburg, died Sunday, May 31, at home.

He is survived by his wife, Camille of Stroudsburg; sons, James and daughter-in-law Debbie Thomson of Harvard, Mass., and Larry and daughter-in-law Martha Breslauer of Seattle, Wash.; grandsons, Elijah and Arlo Breslauer of Seattle, Wash., James and Debbie's adopted son, Andy and his wife, Jessica, and children Sandra and Eric of Lowell, Mass.; stepsons, Chris and Nick Centrella and stepdaughter-in-law Diane Centrella of Stroudsburg and Nick and Diane's son, Garland, also of Stroudsburg; and his niece, Maggie Conu of Cheltenham, England. Tom's first wife, Lisl, died in 1974.

He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1940 after a lengthy internment in the Dachau Concentration Camp. His father was killed in the Battle of the Somme, fighting in the German Army in World War I, and his mother was killed in the Riga Concentration Camp in December 1941.

He was drafted in 1942 and served from 1943 until 1946 as a member of the 79th Infantry Division, fighting in Europe during the second World War. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 with the rank of tech sergeant.

He moved to Stroudsburg in 1952 to start and manage the Pocono Shoe Factory. In 1960 he started his own business, the Lisa Bee Manufacturing Co., producing women's blouses. He sold his business in 1982.

He was the past president of Temple Israel, past president of the American Cancer Society, president and Treasurer of the B'Nai B'Rith Lodge, treasurer of SCORE, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of the Stroudsburgs, an advisory board member of the Northhampton Community College, and a board member of the Pocono Healthy Communities Alliance.

After his retirement, he gave hundreds of talks to schools and organizations about his life experiences, and he tried very hard to impress on young people their responsibility to make this a better world, where people will be able to live in peace and harmony with each other. He received more than 6,000 thank-you letters from students who heard him speak.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Temple Israel on Wallace Street, Stroudsburg, with burial in Temple Israel Cemetery, Marshalls Creek. There will be a reception following the service at the Shawnee Inn.
