His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 8½ inches, with Fair complexion, Blue eyes and Light hair. Private Jackins was promoted First Corporal November 30, 1861, and promoted Sergeant March 19, 1862. During June he was on duty on the Mail Line and during July and August, 1863, he was on duty at Ham’s Fork of the Green River. Sergeant Jackins was reenlisted by Captain William M. Johns for a one year term as a Veteran Volunteer at Camp Douglas, Utah Territory, September 25 and was mustered in by First Lieutenant Stephen Everett Jocelyn October 5, 1864. Surgeon Robert King Reid was the was the Examining Surgeon of Sergeant Jackins at his reenlistment. Sergeant Jackins was transferred from Company I, Third Regiment of Infantry, to Company B, Third Battalion of Infantry, California Volunteers, November 1, 1864. The Company Muster Rolls dated from May to October, 1865, report him as First Sergeant. First Sergeant Jackins was mustered out near Denver, Colorado Territory, October 4, 1865.
