Thomas Deniston was the son of James Denniston, a native of Pennsylvania, and his wife, Sarah. James Denniston moved to what is now Preble County, Ohio about 1800. Land records show he acquired land in Hamilton County, Ohio, Lanier Township in 1808. Thomas Deniston was born and raised in Lanier Township, Preble County, Ohio along with his brothers John, James Jr, William, Michael and David Deniston and his sister, Margaret (Deniston) Graham.

Thomas married Sarah "Sallie" Redding, the daughter of Ezekiel Redding and Rebecca Mason of Virginia. Thomas and Sarah were married January 6, 1825 in Preble County, Ohio. They were the parents of Alfred Lanier Deniston, Ezekiel Monroe Deniston, Rebecca Ann Deniston, Clarissa "Clara" (Deniston) Brown, Sarah Jane Deniston, Pauline Robinson Deniston and Charlotte Deniston, born in Ohio and Michigan.

Thomas and Sarah moved to the Niles area of Berrien County, Michigan about 1830. Thomas was a master butcher and in the retail grocery business in Niles, Michigan. He died in his seventy-eighth year.
