John was the son of Jacob H. HUFFORD and Mary LINK. John first married Sarah Elizabeth "Sarie" SIMMONS. They married in 1850 in Scott Co., Kentucky. With Sarie, John had six children: Howard F., Enoch Smith, James Harvey, Mary Frances, and Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie." Sarie died the day after birthing their youngest child, and John named the baby after her dead mother.

John second married Bettie SCEARCY, within a year after his first wife died. With Bettie, John had seven children: Jennie B., May Belle, John W., Annie Wood, Eli Harvey, Newton Scarce, and Kemp Minor.
