Vernon was the second son of Bertie Franklin and Minnie Dayton Weeks Whigham. He married Lizzie Mae Canant on September 2, 1933. He was the father of six children, five of whom lived to adulthood. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After the war he worked at Beall Hardware for six years where he learned the construction trade. Vernon then became a housing contractor and and was self employed for his remaining working career. He retired in 1990 after 40 years in the building business. He spent his last years as a resident of Opp Nursing Facility in Opp, Covington County, Alabama.
Vernon owned land outside Samson, and the road on which several of his children live is named Vernon Road.
