Newspaper Obituary, Salinas Californian, Friday, February 5, 1965:
"Mary Duran, 93, Dies; Descendant of Governor, Alcalde in Old Monterey"
Mrs. Mary A. Duran, 93 years old on Jan 2, died in a Salinas hospital Thursday. When she was born in Freedom near Watsonville in 1872 She already had half the history of early California tied into her heritage. He great-great uncle was Gov. Juan Bautista Alvarado, one-time governor of California, and her grandfather, Joaquin Alvarado served as alcalde of Monterey making himself popular enough to have the main street named for him.
Mrs. Duran, who has been a resident of Gonzales for the last 45 years, living in that community at 29 A Street. Her husband, Jesus Duran, preceded her in death in August of 1945. The couple was married on Oct. 28, 1889, when she was 17.
One of her fondest memories, and they were numerous over her span of nearly 100 years of Coastal California's history, were the years she was married to Duran and became the mother of 13 children. For many years they lived on the Quien Sabe rancho. Her first school days were spent on "Whiskey Hill," now Freedom.
Busy as a housewife and mother, she found time to write endlessly in a diary that has come down to her children. She painted then, and until the time of her last illness, with bright colors suggestive of the primitive. Until a broken wrist stopped this, she played the guitar.
Only last year children and grandchildren, gathered at the Gonzales home of Mrs. Duran to celebrate her natal day and join her in dancing.
Survivors of the 13 children are five sons and three daughters: Joaquin, Arthur S, Ignacio, Edward G. and Charles A. Duran, all of Gonzales; Mrs. Angelina Subia, Oakdale, Mrs. Lena Echeverria and Mrs. Gladys Vargas, both of Salinas; 28-grandchildren, 95 great grandchildren and 12 great, great grandchildren. Her sister, Mrs. Sally Vioget of San Jose, also survives.
Services will be held Monday, 10:15 a.m. in Muller's mortuary chapel, thence to St. Theodore's Catholic church in Gonzales, when a requiem mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Gonzales Community cemetery.
Rosary will be recited in the mortuary chapel Sunday at 7:30 p.m."
