Ann Field was probably the youngest of seven children born to William Field (1698-1748) and his wife Jane, possibly Benton (d. after 1773). She was born on the Maryland/Pennsylvania border and probably came to North Carolina with her mother circa 1753/5.

Ann married Ninian Beall Hamilton, a son of Ninian and Margaret Lucas Hamilton. They moved to South Carolina around 1789, to Kentucky by 1796, and were in New Spain (now Missouri) before 1802. They were listed in the 1830 census of St. Louis Co., Missouri as being between 90 and 100 years old.

Ann and Ninian had nine children: William Hamilton (c. 1765-1832/4, m. Elizabeth Tanzey), Andrew Hamilton (c. 1767-1849, m. Penelope), Margaret Hamilton (c. 1769-after 1836, m. Leonard Farrar), Sarah Hamilton (c. 1772-?, m. Theophilus McKinney), Ninnian Hamilton (1777-1836, m. Sarah Woods), Jane Hamilton (c. 1780-?, m. Joshua Tanzey), Ann Hamilton (unmarried in 1802), Jeremiah Hamilton (1782-1847, m. Martha Mitchell, 2nd m. Elizabeth Fisher), Mary "Polly" Hamilton (c. 1784-1836/7, m. Robert Bay).
