Adademy supervisor Roberty McCann told reporters, "Ann was cool as a cucumber.
She's a very shy, demure little girl with great presence of mind ot put her training to work." In a matter of weeks, the probationary police recruit was presented with the Medal of Merit by Mayor Richard J. Daley and with the department's own Medal of Valor.

The school where Ann Leybourne was enrolled full time was the Chicago Police Academy. She had been appointed a police officer for the city the previous October and the police star that rode in her purse with her .38 bore the number 4766.
