Services for Mrs. Francis (Nita) Gilmer Harmon will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sparkman-Hillcrest Northwest Highway Chapel in Dallas.

Mrs. Harmon, who died Saturday at age 96, was an avid gardener, a board member of the Dallas Garden Center and a member of various garden clubs, including the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain.

"The reason she loved gardens so much was because when you walk into a garden, the stress just passes away," said Mrs. Royal A. (Bertie) Ferris Jr., who had worked with Mrs. Harmon in many organizations since 1947. "This is where Nita could relax."

Mrs. Harmon's daughter, Nita K.O.H. Smith, said her mother was an adventurous, outspoken woman.

"She was one of the first women to fly in an open airplane," Mrs. Smith said. "She sold the most war bonds during World War I in order to win that prize."

Mrs. Harmon was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church.

Other survivors include son Francis Gilmer Harmon II of Houston; grandchildren Edgar L. Smith II of Dallas, Nita H. Smith and Frank H. Smith of Austin, and Frank G. Harmon III, Phelps J. Murphy Harmon, Suzi Harmon Reid and William Phelps Harmon, all of Houston.

Memorials can be made to the Texas Garden Club, 3111 Old Garden Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76107.
