He was married to Dorcas Elston March 4, 1858. To this union were born eleven children, seven sons and four daughters. One daughter, Lucy, preceded him to the better world where parting will be no more. The children are Alfred, Sion, John, Polk, William, Mrs. Stephen [Ella] Redman, Mrs. Lewis [Minnie] Senner of Olney, Mrs. Lynden [Effie] Bowden of Sac City, Iowa, and Harry and Elijah of Fornfelt, Missouri.
He is survived by twenty-five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Linnie Scamahorn and one brother, Richard Gaddy, both of Olney; and two half-brothers, Charley of Olney, and Mack of Claremont.
He enlisted in Co. G, 98th Ill. Infantry, Aug. 2, 1862, and was discharged at Gallatin, Tenn., Jan. 30, 1863. His sufferings were of long duration, but he bore them without a murmur, only saying he wished the Lord would take him home, for he was ready and willing to go.
He was an affectionate husband, a kind and loving father, a good neighbor, and respected by all who knew him. It was so hard to give up our dear father, but we know his sufferings are ended and he has gone to rest, a sweet rest that never will be broken. He will be sadly missed in the home by his bereaved wife and children, but our loss is his gain. The funeral was held at Pleasant Ridge April 26 at half past ten o'clock by Bro. Boley, and he was laid to rest in the Elston Cemetery.
