On 28 Apr 1895, he married Lizzie Holt.
He attended Sam Houston Normal Institute (now Sam Houston State Univ.), Huntsville, Texas and Southern Normal University, Huntingdon, TN, where in 1901, he was granted a law degree. In 1901, he was licensed as an attorney in Texas and from 1904-06, served as the County Attorney for San Jacinto.
In 1906, he was elected to the 13th, 31st, 33rd, 34th & 35th Texas Legislatures serving from Polk, Angelina, San Jacinto and San Augustine counties. In 1917, he was elected the 41st Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.
During World War I, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Dept.
