CARL - Sarah T. Etheridge, 84, died Monday, June 8, 2009.

Born in Gwinnett County, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Tempie Kilgore Tuggle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Garfield Etheridge, Sr.; and sisters, Vivian Cagle and Dorothy Mabry. She was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church and played basketball during her high school years before graduating in 1942. After retiring from R & R Manufacturing Company, she opened her own clothing stores in Carl and Winder. She was a past Carl Town Council member and served as mayor of Carl, the first female mayor in Barrow County. A member of the Eastern Star, she was a volunteer at Barrow Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Alfred G. "Terpie" and Rose Etheridge, Carl; grandchildren, Joey Etheridge, and Debbie and Redd Martin; great-grandchildren, Kelley Martin and Kimberley Martin; and companion and friend, Grady Frank Cheely.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 10, at 2 p.m., from Smith Memory Chapel, with Revs. David Moore and Brother Billy Ray Banks officiating. Burial will be in Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 9, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
