Walter Scott Hake Sr. was the son of William Harrison Hake and Catherine Hake. His paternal grandparents were Rev. Emanuel Hake and Jane Elizabeth McConnel Hake. His maternal grandparents were David Hake Sr. and Dorothy Hood Hake. Walter married Kathryn Lou "Kate" Laughlin, on 29 December 1904 in Iowa County, Wisconsin. Kate was the daughter of Thomas J. and Frederica Laughlin.

Kate was born in December of 1883, in Iowa County, Wisconsin, and died on 24 December 1938, in Elroy, Juneau County, in an automobile accident. Robert, her son suffered a brain concussion. Kate was president of the Western Division of the Wisconsin Federation of Women's Clubs. Thomas Laughlin, her father was a hotel keeper.

Walter Hake Sr. was a school principal in Elroy, Wisconsin and later an Insurance Agent for New York Life
