Meta was the youngest child born of Rev. Thomas Stewart Armistead (1842-1922) and his second wife, Frances M. J. (Jerkins) Armistead (1876-1963). At the time of Meta's birth, Rev. Armistead was retired from the ministry and the family was living in a house on Swearingen Avenue at the NE corner of Gilbert at Bartow, Polk County, Florida. (City Directories 1915-1919). Meta was born at this house at 3:15 AM on 13 February 1915. Her father was 73 ½ years old at Meta's birth. Data:TS Armistead Bible and PMLyons.

Meta attended the local public schools of Bartow and graduated from Summerlin Institute. Summerlin Institute was an Academy named for Jacob Summerlin, a wealthy cattleman who donated 40 acres of land for building a senior high academy. Meta met a young man by the name of Bradley Houston Overton. Bradley was the son of Charles Ernest Overton who died about 1918? (must verify death year) and Vivian Irene (Seiler) Overton (1899-1968).
