WISE, Va. – Dr. Jim D. Graham, 74, also of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008.
A native of Coeburn, Va., Dr. Graham received his Bachelor of Science from Emory & Henry College, a Master of Science from Appalachian State University and an Ed.D. from Virginia Tech.
After receiving his education, Dr. Graham returned home and served students in the Wise County public schools for more than 40 years, including as principal at Wise Elementary School, principal of J.J. Kelly High School, assistant superintendent of instruction, and division superintendent for more than 18 years. During his tenure as school superintendent, Dr. Graham was recognized as an innovative leader who worked tirelessly to raise educational standards and make Wise County a regional model for excellence and to significantly increase teacher salaries. Six new schools were built during his administration and he conceived many innovative programs, such as PACE competitions for gifted students, a PACE band and establishment of the state's second electronic learning classroom.
He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and was president of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. He was recognized by the National School Boards Association as a "Top 100 Executive Educator," and as "Virginia Superintendent of the Year." He received a Charter Day Citation for meritorious service in education from Emory & Henry College and the Kanto Award, recognizing outstanding service by the Wise County Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he was past president of the Wise Lions Club and member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Wise.
Dr. Graham was predeceased by his parents, Hobart and Nettie Graham, formerly of Coeburn.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eva Yeary Graham of Abingdon; son, Mark Graham and wife Tonya of Abingdon; daughter, Kelly Graham of Bluefield, W.Va.; a special grandson, Colin Graham; a sister, Helen Molter and husband Fred of Chester, Va.; a niece, Lynn DeButts and husband Jim of Hopewell, Va.; an uncle, John Graham and wife Blanche of Wise; and cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wise. Funeral services will at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Don Smith and the Rev. Phillip Bates officiating. Burial will follow at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association.
