She taught school in Southern ID, and later in McCall and Donnelly, ID.
In the summer of 1926, she and her friend, Phoebe, traveled through all the Western States in their Model T (named Betsy). They picked fruit or did whatever short-term jobs they could find, and camped out. At one point, Betsy's rear bumper was snagged by a passing bus, and they were dragged backward along the road with Tess, Phoebe and the bus passengers all screaming for the bus driver to stop.
After she retired from teaching school, as a volunteer tutor Tess taught both children and adults to read. Her last volunteer position, when she was in her 80s, was at Marylhurst College in OR, where she tutored special needs students.
She was a daughter of Idaho pioneers who helped settle Franklin, ID.
Deceased sibling not listed: Hazel Fern Stalker McBride, 1918-1976, burial place unknown.
