With his brothers away in military service, Charles helped work the family farm at Cross Anchor, SC, during the Civil War. In 1872, his family migrated to De Soto Co., MS where he married Samantha Williamson on 3-26-1873. He and Samantha continued to migrate west with the Kellys first to Sebastian Co., AR in 1879, and then to Montgomery Co., AR, in 1886. There they homesteaded land near historic Macedonia Cemetery.

They had the following children:

1) Clarence Marvin Kelly (1879-1933) w. Martha Caroline Posey (1888-1929)

2) Mora Wightman kelly (1881-1940) w. Jennie Maddox (1883-1977)

3) Linus Moss Kelly (1883-1958) w. Cenia Elizabeth Wallace (1888-1958) 2w. Evelyn Evans (1898-1941) 3w. Jean May Elkins Snodgrass (1892-1970)

4) Doane Hendrix Kelly (1886-1964) w. Margaret Leinster Hess (1893-1962)

5) Herbert Doyle Kelly (1887-1903)

6) Wendell Key Kelly (1888-1976) w. Lettie Knight (1883-1973)

7) Kennedy Kendall Kelly (1890-1918)
