Swint was the son of John Russell and Margaret Rowan Cooper of Cades Cove and the grandson of Graham County pioneers William "Billy" and Mary "Polly Banks Warner Cooper who came from SC to what was then Cherokee County in the early 1800's. His mother's family (Rowans and Davises) moved to Cades Cove from Yancey County, NC in the late 1830's, along with other family members. Isaaac Rowan, Swint's maternal uncle, was one of the first settlers in Graham County. Swint married Sarah "Sallie" Stratton and settled on Yellow Creek where they raised their family. Many of their offspring still live in the area, as do many of the Cooper and Davis relatives.
Swint was the brother of Sallie Jane who married Albert Nichols; Tennessee Dorcas, who married Harve Elliott; Amanda, who married Henry McGarth Ditmore; Margaret Melvina who married William J. LeQuire. He had two half brothers, James Franklin and John T. Cooper.
Swint and Sallie were the parents of ten children: George W. Cooper, Mary Jane, John Russell, James T., Rhoda E., Artie, Adelaide, Alice, Nora P. and Flora Mae Cooper
