Polly was born and raised in Cades Cove where her maternal grandparents, George and Sallie Rowan had settled as pioneers. Her mother died when she was a baby and she was raised by a new stepmother, Hannah and her father John. On August 28, 1881, she married a neighbor, Will LeQuire, whose sister had married Polly's half-brother Jim Cooper. She and her husband later moved to Tuskeegee in Graham County, NC and lived there several years. When they were older, they moved to the Mulberry Precinct of Monroe County, TN where they lived in the home of their daughter Minnie and her husband Rev. Jasper Marion Shope.
