In 1816, "the year without a summer" due to a volcanic eruption in the South Pacific. This caused major crop failures throughout New England. Justis and brother, Phineas, left home and walked to upstate New York to the Erie county area. Presumably, they left, in part, to "make for more room at the dining table."

Some sources indicate that Phineas and Justis first started with a "batchelors cabin" near Springville, Erie, NY and made some money by clearing forest for people in the area.
