"CLYMER -- Erected from Westfield and Gaines townships in December, 1850, named for William B. Clymer, agent for the Bingham estate, and grandson of Hon. George Clymer, distinguished Pennsylvanian and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. The original name of the township was Middletown. Most of the earliest settlers came in 1815 from southern New York, and were of New England origin. Sugar camps provided an early industry which continued until recent years.

Villages of Clymer, Mixtown, Sabinsville, Davis, Azelta, and Lansing -- James Mix was the first settler and named the village of Mixtown, in 1818. Simon Rexford settled there in 1820. Charles P. Douglass, in January, 1837, settled at what is now Sabinsville, and erected a sawmill, on Mill Creek. The village was named for Alonzo G. Sabin. The post office was established in 1849, Charles P. Douglass postmaster. Azelta post office was established June 2, 1892, Wilmot H. Abbey postmaster. Clymer assumed the postal duties of Mixtown in October, 1894. Population in 1940 was 710."
